Community-Based Flood Risk Reduction Initiative

From November to December 2024, MSSADO implemented a community-based flood risk reduction project in flood-prone villages of rural Herat Province with support from AWEC’s Just Future Project. The initiative established an early warning system, trained 52 local volunteers, and installed basic monitoring tools to strengthen community preparedness. Through awareness activities and emergency drills, the project enhanced local disaster resilience and promoted sustainable, community-led flood risk management.

Key Activities

  • Establishment of a community-based early warning system in four flood-vulnerable villages

  • Recruitment and training of 52 local volunteers as “human sensors” for flood monitoring and reporting

  • Installation of rain gauges and water level markers to support real-time flood detection

  • Delivery of flood preparedness workshops on emergency planning, evacuation, and first aid

  • Design and distribution of flood awareness materials, including brochures, posters, and banners

  • Organization of community-wide emergency response drills to test warning and evacuation systems

  • Creation of a community-managed maintenance fund to ensure long-term system sustainability
